📦 How to Store and Protect Your Vinyl Records Properly
Share
Vinyl records are durable — but they’re not invincible. With a little care, your collection can last a lifetime. Here’s how to store and protect your records the right way.
🧍 1. Store Records Vertically, Not Flat
Never stack your records — it warps them over time. Always store them upright like books, with even pressure on each side.
Use proper record crates, shelves, or IKEA-style cube storage.
📦 2. Use Inner and Outer Sleeves
Protect your records and sleeves from dust, scratches, and scuffs with quality sleeves.
- Anti-static inner sleeves: Replace old paper ones
- Poly outer sleeves: Preserve artwork, prevent ring wear
- No PVC sleeves: They can cause chemical damage over time
🌡️ 3. Avoid Heat, Humidity, and Sunlight
Keep records in a cool, dry place, away from:
- Windows or direct sunlight
- Radiators or heaters
- Damp basements or humid rooms
Ideal temp: 18–22°C
Humidity: 40–50%
🧼 4. Clean Records Before and After Playing
Dust = static = noise. A carbon fibre brush before and after each spin keeps your grooves clean.
For deeper cleaning:
- Use record cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth
- Try a record cleaning machine for larger collections
🪟 5. Don’t Leave Records on the Turntable
It’s tempting to leave your now-playing record on the platter — but over time, this invites dust, warping, and damage. Always return it to its sleeve.
