Big Thief – Two Hands (Vinyl LP)

Two Hands is the fourth studio album by American indie rock band Big Thief, released in October 2019 through 4AD. Arriving just five months after U.F.O.F., the album offers a strikingly earthy counterpart to that record's dreamlike atmosphere. Across ten songs, the band blends intimate folk songwriting with unvarnished guitar rock, capturing the intensity and vulnerability that have made them one of the most acclaimed groups of their generation.

Recorded at Sonic Ranch in the Texas desert near the Mexican border, Two Hands was made with the musicians playing close together, largely live and with minimal overdubbing. The result is a warm, immediate sound that puts Adrianne Lenker's expressive voice and songwriting at the centre, supported by Buck Meek's guitar, Max Oleartchik's bass and James Krivchenia's drums.

Opening track Rock and Sing begins quietly, while Forgotten Eyes builds into an urgent, compassionate reflection on people living at the margins. The title track moves between tenderness and tension, and Shoulders delivers one of the record's most affecting performances. Throughout, the band favours emotional honesty over studio polish.

The album's centrepiece, Not, is a ferocious six-minute performance driven by Lenker's repeated, searching lyrics and an extended, distorted guitar outro. Elsewhere, Wolf and Replaced reveal the group's quieter melodic instincts, before Cut My Hair closes the record on an intimate note.

This standard black vinyl LP edition is issued by 4AD in a gatefold sleeve. With its dynamic performances and spacious, natural production, Two Hands rewards attentive listening and is an essential album for fans of contemporary indie rock and alternative folk.
