Undercurrent is the celebrated 1962 collaboration between legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans and acclaimed guitarist Jim Hall. Widely regarded as one of the finest piano and guitar duo recordings in jazz history, the album is a masterclass in musical sensitivity, improvisation and understated elegance. Combining Evans' expressive piano playing with Hall's beautifully restrained guitar work, Undercurrent creates an intimate listening experience that remains captivating more than six decades after its original release.
Recorded in New York during April and May 1962, the album brings together two extraordinary musicians at important moments in their careers. Evans had established himself as one of jazz's most influential pianists through his work with Miles Davis and his groundbreaking trio recordings, while Hall was already recognised for his sophisticated guitar playing and exceptional ability to interact with other musicians.
Unlike conventional jazz recordings featuring a rhythm section, Undercurrent relies entirely on the interplay between piano and guitar. Without bass or drums, every melodic phrase, harmonic movement and moment of silence becomes more pronounced. Evans and Hall move effortlessly between accompaniment and improvisation, responding to each other's ideas with remarkable intuition and creating music that feels like an intimate conversation.
The album opens with a stunning interpretation of My Funny Valentine, transforming the familiar jazz standard into an inventive exchange of melodic ideas and rhythmic interplay. I Hear a Rhapsody follows with a beautifully flowing arrangement, while Dream Gypsy highlights the duo's ability to create atmosphere through delicate phrasing and subtle harmonic exploration.
Other highlights include Romain, an original composition by Jim Hall that demonstrates the guitarist's sophisticated melodic approach, and Skating in Central Park, written by Modern Jazz Quartet pianist John Lewis. The reflective Darn That Dream provides another outstanding example of the duo's lyrical sensitivity and effortless musical connection.
The album's remarkable sound comes from the balance between Evans' impressionistic piano harmonies and Hall's warm, expressive guitar tone. Their improvisations are thoughtful rather than showy, with each musician allowing space for the other's ideas to develop. The result is a recording that rewards close listening while remaining wonderfully accessible to anyone discovering classic jazz.
Originally released through United Artists Jazz, Undercurrent has become an essential recording in the catalogues of both musicians. It was also the first of their two collaborative albums, followed by Intermodulation in 1966.
This 2017 DOL Records deluxe reissue presents the album on a single 180g heavyweight black vinyl LP, housed in a gatefold sleeve. The edition is advertised with two additional recordings from the original sessions, Stairway to the Stars and I'm Getting Sentimental Over You, alongside the six original album tracks.
The album's iconic cover features the celebrated underwater photograph by Toni Frissell, one of the most recognisable images in jazz record sleeve design.
With its exquisite musicianship, beautiful interpretations of jazz standards and extraordinary musical chemistry, Undercurrent is an essential addition to any jazz vinyl collection, particularly for admirers of Bill Evans, Jim Hall and intimate acoustic jazz recordings.
