Originally released in 1998, Music Has the Right to Children is the groundbreaking debut studio album from Scottish electronic duo Boards of Canada. Combining warm analogue synthesisers, hypnotic rhythms and fragments of nostalgic childhood sounds, the album helped redefine the possibilities of ambient electronic music. Created by brothers Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin, it remains one of the most influential releases in the Warp Records catalogue and an essential recording for listeners exploring intelligent dance music, downtempo and experimental electronica.

The album opens with the atmospheric Wildlife Analysis, immediately establishing its distinctive mixture of distant melodies and dreamlike textures. An Eagle in Your Mind introduces slow-moving rhythms and warped synthesiser lines, while Telephasic Workshop combines intricate percussion with manipulated vocal samples. The playful Roygbiv has become one of Boards of Canada's most recognisable compositions, its memorable analogue melody capturing the nostalgic warmth at the heart of the album. Other highlights include the hypnotic Turquoise Hexagon Sun, the expansive Rue the Whirl and the mesmerising Aquarius.

Recorded during the mid-1990s at the duo's Hexagon Sun studio in Scotland, Music Has the Right to Children draws on vintage synthesisers, tape manipulation, sampled voices and understated hip-hop-influenced beats. Its distinctive production creates an atmosphere that feels simultaneously comforting and unsettling, recalling faded educational films, childhood memories and forgotten television broadcasts. Rather than relying on conventional song structures, the album unfolds as a carefully connected series of musical scenes, with short interludes providing transitions between longer compositions.

This double vinyl LP reissue from Warp Records presents the original 17-track vinyl programme across four sides. Featuring the album's richly detailed electronic compositions, Music Has the Right to Children is an essential addition to collections of ambient, IDM, downtempo and experimental electronic music.
