Boards Of Canada – Tomorrow's Harvest (Vinyl 2LP)

Originally released in 2013, Tomorrow's Harvest is the fourth studio album from Scottish electronic duo Boards of Canada, comprising brothers Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin. Arriving eight years after The Campfire Headphase, the album marked a highly anticipated return for one of electronic music's most distinctive and influential acts. Released through Warp Records, Tomorrow's Harvest explores darker, more cinematic territory, combining analogue synthesizers, intricate rhythms and haunting melodies with an atmosphere of uncertainty and decay.

The album opens with Gemini, a brief orchestral introduction that establishes its ominous, soundtrack-inspired atmosphere. Reach for the Dead follows with slowly evolving synthesizer melodies, deep bass and hypnotic percussion, becoming one of the record's defining tracks. White Cyclosa introduces eerie electronic textures, while Jacquard Causeway builds an intricate arrangement around shifting rhythms and overlapping melodic patterns. Shorter pieces such as Telepath and Transmisiones Ferox provide unsettling interludes between the more expansive compositions.

Across the second half, Palace Posy introduces fragmented samples and playful rhythmic experimentation, while Split Your Infinities develops an atmosphere of mounting tension. Nothing Is Real offers a moment of warmth through its gently repeating synthesizer melody, contrasting with the darker textures surrounding it. New Seeds gradually unfolds into one of the album's most uplifting compositions, before Come to Dust returns to its central themes of uncertainty and decline. The closing piece, Semena Mertvykh, leaves the listener with a haunting, unresolved atmosphere.

Drawing inspiration from science-fiction films, public information broadcasts and electronic soundtracks of the 1970s and 1980s, Tomorrow's Harvest creates an immersive musical world. Boards of Canada's characteristic use of vintage recording techniques, degraded textures and subtly shifting melodies gives the album an unmistakable sense of nostalgia, even as its themes look towards an uncertain future. The result is a carefully constructed listening experience that rewards attention from beginning to end.

While earlier albums such as Music Has the Right to Children and Geogaddi established the duo's reputation for atmospheric electronic music, Tomorrow's Harvest takes their sound into more foreboding territory. Its combination of ambient passages, downtempo rhythms and cinematic arrangements has made it an essential release for listeners interested in experimental electronic music, IDM and analogue synthesizer soundscapes.
