Boy Soda – Soulstar (Vinyl LP)

Australian singer-songwriter BOY SODA introduces his distinctive musical world on Soulstar, his debut studio album released in October 2025. Born Brae Luafalealo, the rising R&B artist brings together the warmth of classic soul, the rhythmic complexity of jazz and the melodic sensibilities of contemporary alternative R&B. Created in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales with a talented ensemble of musicians and collaborators, Soulstar is an ambitious and deeply personal recording that showcases one of Australia's most exciting emerging voices.

Opening track My Body introduces the album's expressive combination of soulful vocals, intricate instrumentation and reflective songwriting. Lil' Obsession explores the emotional aftermath of a relationship, while Hit the Road! and Never the Same demonstrate BOY SODA's ability to move between infectious grooves and intimate storytelling. A Father's Heart draws on his family relationships and Samoan heritage, offering one of the album's most personal moments, while 4K, featuring Dean Brady, combines contemporary R&B production with the energy of live musicians.

Elsewhere, Blink Twice balances smooth melodies with dynamic arrangements, while Good Morning introduces a more expansive, reflective atmosphere. PM and SLIPPERY draw on the influence of early-2000s R&B, combining expressive vocals with detailed rhythms and layered instrumentation. Find a Way examines personal growth and the complexities of relationships, while SELFISH explores grief and the difficult emotions surrounding the loss of a loved one.

Rather than relying entirely on programmed production, BOY SODA assembled an extensive group of musicians for the recording, incorporating live drums, bass, piano, guitar, brass, strings and backing vocals. Influenced by artists including Erykah Badu and the soulful production traditions of J Dilla, the album balances contemporary electronic elements with the spontaneity and warmth of live performance. Its lyrics explore identity, family, love, grief and self-acceptance, giving the music an emotional depth that extends beyond its sophisticated arrangements.

Released through Warner Music Australia, this black vinyl LP edition presents twelve tracks from Soulstar. With its combination of neo-soul, jazz-influenced arrangements and contemporary Australian R&B, the album is a rewarding addition for listeners drawn to expressive songwriting and richly layered modern soul music.
