Originally released in 1999, When The Pawn... is the second studio album from Fiona Apple and one of the defining alternative singer-songwriter records of its era. Following her breakthrough debut Tidal, Apple returned with a more adventurous, rhythmically complex and intensely personal collection built around her distinctive vocals and piano playing.

Featuring standout tracks including "Paper Bag", "Fast As You Can", "Limp" and "I Know", the album combines sophisticated songwriting with shifting rhythms, dramatic piano arrangements and richly layered instrumentation. Songs such as "On The Bound", "Love Ridden" and "Get Gone" showcase Apple's ability to move effortlessly between vulnerability, defiance and biting lyrical wit.

Produced by Jon Brion, When The Pawn... surrounds Apple's voice and piano with inventive percussion, strings, keyboards and unconventional arrangements. The collaboration created an album that feels simultaneously intimate and expansive, with each song given its own distinctive musical character.
