John Butler is the self-titled debut album from Australian roots musician John Butler, originally released in 1998. Recorded during the formative years of what would become the John Butler Trio, the album introduced Butler's distinctive combination of acoustic guitar, roots, blues, folk and improvisation, laying the foundations for one of Australia's most successful independent music careers.

The album features early favourites including Valley, Sista, Colours and Under An Indian Sky, alongside the second recorded incarnation of Butler's signature instrumental Ocean. Its extended performances and intricate guitar work capture the raw, organic character of Butler's early material and the sound that began building his following through live performances around Western Australia.

Recorded at Studio Couch in Fremantle, Western Australia, the album features Gavin Shoesmith on bass and Jason McGann on drums alongside Butler. It was engineered and mixed by Shaun O'Callaghan and George Nikoloudis and represents the Trio's earliest studio recordings together.

This official 2021 remastered vinyl edition marked the first time the album had been released on vinyl. The music is spread across two 140g vinyl LPs and presented in a double gatefold sleeve, with the original artwork carefully reproduced from John Butler's original paintings.
