Virgin is the bold fourth studio album from New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde, released on 27 June 2025 through Universal Music New Zealand and Republic Records. Following the sun-drenched introspection of Solar Power, Lorde returns to the raw emotion, pulsing electronic rhythms and adventurous alternative pop that helped define her earlier albums Pure Heroine and Melodrama. Featuring the singles What Was That, Man of the Year and Hammer, the album explores identity, relationships, transformation and self-discovery with striking honesty.

Co-produced by Lorde and Jim-E Stack, Virgin features contributions from acclaimed musicians and producers including Devonté Hynes (Blood Orange), Dan Nigro, Fabiana Palladino, Buddy Ross and Andrew Aged. Its distinctive sound blends minimalist electronic production, driving percussion, intimate vocals and experimental pop arrangements, creating an album that feels both deeply personal and sonically adventurous.

Across eleven tracks, Lorde examines the complexities of growing older, changing relationships and understanding herself in new ways. The songwriting is direct and emotionally exposed, often contrasting vulnerable lyrics with energetic, dance-influenced production. The result is a compelling balance of introspection and release, capturing an artist embracing uncertainty and creative freedom.

The album opens with Hammer, an intense and atmospheric introduction that establishes its themes of transformation and personal reinvention. Built around shifting electronic textures and a powerful rhythmic foundation, the song captures the restless energy that runs throughout the record.

What Was That follows with one of the album's defining moments. Combining shimmering synthesisers, an infectious beat and Lorde's unmistakable vocal delivery, the song reflects on the emotional aftermath of a relationship. Its nostalgic atmosphere recalls the dance-floor melancholy of Melodrama while introducing a more direct and mature perspective.

Shapeshifter explores the changing nature of identity and the ways people adapt within relationships. Man of the Year offers one of the album's most emotionally revealing performances, pairing sparse electronic production with deeply personal songwriting. Favourite Daughter closes the first side with a reflective examination of family, expectations and the complicated desire for acceptance.

Side B opens with Current Affairs, continuing the album's exploration of intimacy and emotional uncertainty. Clearblue introduces a particularly vulnerable moment, using restrained production to place Lorde's voice and lyrics at the centre of the recording.

GRWM brings a more rhythmic, contemporary electronic sound, while Broken Glass explores personal struggles and the process of rebuilding confidence. If She Could See Me Now reflects on growth and the distance between past and present versions of ourselves, combining introspective storytelling with atmospheric instrumentation.

The album concludes with David, an emotionally charged closing track that brings together its central themes of vulnerability, connection and transformation. Its expansive production and expressive vocal performance provide a fitting conclusion to one of Lorde's most revealing collections of songs.

Blending alternative pop, electropop, art pop and experimental electronic music, Virgin captures Lorde at an important creative turning point. Its combination of raw lyricism, distinctive production and memorable melodies makes it essential listening for fans of her earlier work and contemporary alternative pop.
