Mitski - Be The Cowboy (Vinyl LP)

Released in 2018, Be the Cowboy finds Mitski exploring the distance between how people feel and how they present themselves to the world. Following the guitar-heavy intensity of Puberty 2, she turns to piano, synthesizers, disco rhythms and theatrical pop arrangements. Across fourteen remarkably concise songs, the album examines loneliness, desire, self-image and the complicated roles people adopt in relationships.

Geyser begins with restraint before swelling into an overwhelming rush of sound. Why Didn't You Stop Me? places contradictory emotions inside a bright pop setting, while A Pearl captures the persistence of painful memories. Me and My Husband pairs an almost jaunty melody with lyrics that leave a far more unsettled impression.

On the second side, Nobody turns isolation into a danceable, disco-influenced anthem. Pink in the Night is a shimmering expression of longing; Washing Machine Heart is brief, insistent and instantly recognisable. The closing Two Slow Dancers strips away much of the album's energy to contemplate ageing, memory and a relationship that cannot return to what it once was.

Working with longtime collaborator and producer Patrick Hyland, Mitski gives each song a distinct musical identity. Many tracks are over almost before their emotional implications have settled, making the album feel like a series of vivid miniature dramas. The contrasts between exuberant arrangements and vulnerable lyrics are central to its appeal.
