Morcheeba – Big Calm (180g Vinyl LP)

Big Calm is the second studio album from British trip-hop pioneers Morcheeba, originally released in 1998. Building on the atmospheric sound of their debut album Who Can You Trust?, the London trio created a beautifully relaxed collection of downtempo grooves, soulful vocals and richly layered instrumentation. Blending trip-hop, electronica, jazz, blues, folk and psychedelic influences, Big Calm remains one of the defining albums of the late-1990s chillout era.

The 11-track album features some of Morcheeba's most beloved recordings, including the dreamy opening track The Sea, the soulful Part of the Process and the atmospheric Blindfold. Other highlights include Shoulder Holster, Let Me See, Bullet Proof, Over and Over and the expansive title track Big Calm. From its hypnotic rhythms to its warm, melodic arrangements, the album creates an effortlessly immersive listening experience.

Featuring the original Morcheeba lineup of vocalist Skye Edwards and brothers Paul and Ross Godfrey, Big Calm showcases the group's distinctive musical chemistry. Skye Edwards' smooth, soulful voice floats above a rich blend of hip-hop beats, acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards, turntable scratches and atmospheric electronic textures. Ross Godfrey's expressive guitar playing and Paul Godfrey's rhythmic production give the album a sound that is both sophisticated and wonderfully laid-back.

Produced by Morcheeba alongside Pete Norris, the album expanded the group's musical palette beyond the darker trip-hop sounds associated with artists such as Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky. Incorporating elements of country blues, reggae, funk and cinematic lounge music, Big Calm established Morcheeba as one of the most distinctive and accessible acts in British electronic music.

A major commercial and critical success, Big Calm became Morcheeba's best-selling album and achieved platinum certification in the United Kingdom. Its timeless combination of memorable songwriting, atmospheric production and exceptional musicianship has made it an enduring favourite among trip-hop enthusiasts, electronic music fans and vinyl collectors.
