Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Getaway (Vinyl 2LP)

Released in 2016, The Getaway marked a fresh direction for Red Hot Chili Peppers. Produced by Danger Mouse rather than longtime collaborator Rick Rubin, the album blends the band's signature funk-rock energy with electronic textures, layered keyboards and a more reflective mood. Anthony Kiedis' melodic vocals, Flea's elastic bass, Chad Smith's inventive drumming and Josh Klinghoffer's atmospheric guitars give the record its distinctive character.

Dark Necessities opens with a memorable piano-and-bass groove and a melancholy chorus. We Turn Red brings sharper rhythmic attack, while The Longest Wave drifts into a dreamlike guitar atmosphere. Goodbye Angels builds towards an explosive instrumental finish, and Go Robot finds the group embracing a playful dance pulse.

Later songs reveal the album's emotional range: Sick Love features Elton John, Feasting on the Flowers reflects on loss, and Encore has a wistful late-night quality. The closing Dreams of a Samurai is an ambitious, shifting piece that gives the record a fittingly unsettled conclusion. This vinyl 2LP edition, barcode 093624920168, presents the thirteen-track album across four sides.

The shift in producer also changed the album's sense of space. Rather than placing every instrument at the front of the mix, Danger Mouse lets Flea's basslines and Smith's drums lock into patient grooves, with Klinghoffer supplying shimmering chords, small melodic figures and washes of sound. This makes The Getaway especially rewarding on vinyl, where its quieter transitions sit alongside the more forceful songs. The title track sets the tone with a relaxed pulse and layered harmonies, while Detroit recalls the band's restless rock instincts.

Kiedis often writes in fragments and images rather than straightforward narratives, but the songs are linked by a feeling of movement through places, memories and relationships. Goodbye Angels is a highlight for the way it travels from introspective verses to a driving bass-led finale. Go Robot leans into disco rhythms, contrasting sharply with the reflective Encore. Taken together, these changes make the album feel like an evolution rather than a simple repetition of the band's best-known formula.
