Shihad – Old Gods (Vinyl LP)

Old Gods is the tenth studio album from New Zealand rock icons Shihad, released in 2021. Known for their explosive live performances, powerful guitar riffs and uncompromising approach to alternative rock, the Wellington-formed band deliver one of their most aggressive and politically charged records. Led by frontman Jon Toogood, Old Gods combines the intensity of their early heavy sound with lyrics confronting division, prejudice, misinformation and the political tensions of the modern world.

The album opens with Tear Down Those Names, an explosive track driven by crushing guitars, pounding drums and Toogood's commanding vocals. The title track Old Gods continues that intensity, challenging established power structures through its relentless rhythms and confrontational lyrics. Mink Coat brings a darker, groove-heavy approach, while The Hill Song builds tension through muscular riffs and dynamic arrangements. Feel the Fire rounds out the first side with another powerful display of the band's distinctive sound.

On the second side, Little Demons and Empire Falling maintain the album's urgency, pairing driving rhythms with lyrics that reflect on social and political unrest. Just Like You introduces contrasting melodic elements without losing the record's intensity, while Slow Dawning explores a more reflective atmosphere. Closing track The Wreckage brings the album to a powerful conclusion.

Produced by Adam Spark, Old Gods features the established Shihad line-up of Jon Toogood, Phil Knight, Karl Kippenberger and Tom Larkin. The album showcases the chemistry developed across decades of recording and touring, balancing the band's trademark heavy guitar sound with tightly focused songwriting and contemporary production.

This vinyl LP edition features all ten tracks across two sides. From its thunderous opening to its reflective closing moments, Old Gods is an essential addition for fans of Shihad, New Zealand rock and powerful guitar-driven alternative music.
