Silverchair – Freak Show (Limited Edition Numbered 180g Red and Black Marbled Vinyl LP)

Freak Show is the second studio album from Australian alternative rock icons Silverchair, originally released in February 1997. Following the extraordinary international success of their debut album Frogstomp, the Newcastle trio returned with a darker, heavier and more adventurous collection of songs. Combining explosive grunge-inspired guitar riffs, brooding melodies and increasingly sophisticated songwriting, Freak Show captures Silverchair at a pivotal stage in their musical development.

The 14-track album features some of the band's most celebrated recordings, including the ferocious opening single Freak, the emotionally charged Abuse Me, the haunting acoustic ballad Cemetery and the powerful The Door. Other highlights include Slave, No Association, Petrol & Chlorine, Roses and the epic closing track The Closing. From aggressive alternative rock to atmospheric, introspective moments, the album demonstrates a growing musical confidence and creative ambition.

Featuring the original Silverchair lineup of vocalist and guitarist Daniel Johns, bassist Chris Joannou and drummer Ben Gillies, Freak Show showcases the remarkable musical chemistry of three young musicians who had already achieved worldwide success. Johns' distinctive vocals and expressive guitar playing drive the album, while Joannou's powerful bass lines and Gillies' dynamic drumming create a formidable rhythmic foundation.

Produced by acclaimed Australian producer Nick Launay, Freak Show builds upon the heavy alternative rock foundations of Frogstomp while introducing more varied arrangements and experimental influences. The album moves between aggressive, distorted guitar-driven tracks and more melodic compositions, foreshadowing the increasingly ambitious direction Silverchair would explore on subsequent releases such as Neon Ballroom and Diorama.

Released when the band members were still teenagers, Freak Show debuted at number one on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart and achieved substantial international success. Its four singles, Freak, Abuse Me, Cemetery and The Door, helped cement Silverchair's position among Australia's most successful alternative rock bands of the 1990s. The album remains an essential recording from the era and a favourite among Australian rock fans and vinyl collectors.
