Sneaker Pimps – Becoming X (Vinyl 2LP)

Becoming X is the groundbreaking 1996 debut album from British electronic group Sneaker Pimps. Blending trip-hop, alternative rock, atmospheric electronica and downtempo beats, the record helped define the sound of the mid-1990s British electronic music scene. Built around the production of Liam Howe and Chris Corner, with the distinctive vocals of Kelli Dayton, Becoming X combines hypnotic rhythms, dark melodies and memorable pop songwriting.

The album features some of the group's most recognisable recordings, including 6 Underground, a defining trip-hop single with its haunting vocal melody, sweeping strings and laid-back electronic groove. Spin Spin Sugar delivers a more energetic combination of electronic beats and alternative pop, while Post-Modern Sleaze captures the group's atmospheric, slightly unsettling sound. Together, these tracks helped establish Sneaker Pimps as one of the most distinctive electronic acts of the decade.

Elsewhere, Low Place Like Home opens the album with a combination of distorted textures, driving rhythms and understated vocals. Tesko Suicide introduces sharper guitars and restless percussion, while the title track Becoming X explores a more restrained and introspective atmosphere. Songs such as Waterbaby, Roll On and Wasted Early Sunday Morning demonstrate the group's ability to balance experimental production with accessible melodies.

Closing tracks Walking Zero and How Do bring the album to a memorable conclusion, combining cinematic electronic arrangements with Kelli Dayton's expressive vocal performances. Her contributions give Becoming X its unmistakable character, making it the only Sneaker Pimps studio album to feature her as lead vocalist.

This 180g black double-vinyl LP reissue presents the album across four sides at 45 RPM. The track sequence includes the Nellee Hooper Edit of 6 Underground, the Radio Mix of Spin Spin Sugar and the Flight From Nashville Mix of Post-Modern Sleaze, reflecting the later album configuration. Released through Clean Up Records, this edition offers an opportunity to experience one of trip-hop's essential albums on vinyl.
