Snoop Dogg – Tha Doggfather (Vinyl 2LP)

Tha Doggfather is the second studio album from West Coast hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg, originally released in November 1996 through Death Row Records. Following the enormous success of his debut album Doggystyle, Snoop returned with a record that explored a more mature and reflective direction while retaining the laid-back delivery, funk-driven production and unmistakable California sound that established him as one of hip-hop's most influential artists.

Recorded during a period of significant change for Death Row Records, Tha Doggfather marked an important chapter in Snoop's career. With production contributions from Daz Dillinger, DJ Pooh, Sam Sneed and others, the album combines classic G-funk grooves, deep basslines, melodic synthesisers and samples drawn from funk and soul. Snoop's relaxed vocal style moves effortlessly between storytelling, humour, social commentary and confident West Coast lyricism.

The title track, Doggfather, featuring Charlie Wilson, sets the tone with its smooth production and commanding delivery. Snoop Bounce brings an infectious funk groove, while Up Jump Tha Boogie features contributions from Kurupt, Charlie Wilson and Teena Marie. Gold Rush and (Tear 'Em Off) Me and My Doggz deliver harder-edged West Coast hip-hop, contrasting with the soulful atmosphere of Vapors, Snoop's interpretation of the Biz Markie classic.

Other highlights include Groupie, featuring Tha Dogg Pound, Nate Dogg, Warren G and Charlie Wilson, and Snoop's Upside Ya Head, one of the album's best-known singles. Blueberry, Doggyland and Downtown Assassins further showcase the album's mixture of funk, storytelling and collaborative performances. The closing Outro features Makaveli, also known as Tupac Shakur, connecting the record to a defining period in Death Row's history.

Although often compared with the groundbreaking Doggystyle, Tha Doggfather stands as an important record in its own right, documenting Snoop's musical evolution and the changing sound of West Coast hip-hop in the mid-1990s.
