Produced by John Hammond and the band, the album captured the immediacy of their live performances rather than burying the music beneath elaborate overdubs. The opening Love Struck Baby announces the trio with a burst of rockabilly-inflected energy before Pride and Joy settles into an irresistible Texas shuffle. The latter became one of Vaughan's signature songs, showcasing his effortless command of rhythm and lead guitar. The title track, Texas Flood, slows the pace dramatically: his sustained notes, expressive phrasing and impassioned vocals turn a classic blues composition into a deeply personal performance.

Elsewhere, Tell Me channels the swagger of Chicago blues, while the instrumental Testify reveals Vaughan's explosive technique. Side B moves from the lightning-fast guitar workout Rude Mood to the playful Mary Had a Little Lamb and the smoky, late-night atmosphere of Dirty Pool. The album closes with Lenny, a tender instrumental dedicated to Vaughan's wife, offering a beautiful contrast to the fire and intensity elsewhere on the record.
