Tenacious D – The Pick Of Destiny (180g Vinyl LP)

The Pick of Destiny is the outrageous second studio album from American comedy-rock duo Tenacious D, featuring Jack Black and Kyle Gass. Originally released in November 2006, the album also serves as the soundtrack to the cult musical comedy film Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny. Combining thunderous hard rock, heavy metal theatrics, acoustic guitar wizardry and absurdly entertaining storytelling, it captures everything that makes Tenacious D such a distinctive force in rock music.

Produced by John King of The Dust Brothers, the album features an impressive supporting cast, including Dave Grohl on drums and guest vocal appearances from rock legends Ronnie James Dio and Meat Loaf. Beneath the comedy lies some genuinely impressive musicianship, with powerful riffs, elaborate arrangements and Jack Black's remarkable vocal range bringing the duo's musical adventure to life.

The album opens with Kickapoo, an epic introduction following a young Jack Black as he discovers his musical destiny. Featuring appearances from Meat Loaf and Ronnie James Dio, the song moves between theatrical storytelling, acoustic passages and explosive heavy metal. Classico showcases Kyle Gass's impressive guitar playing through a rapid-fire interpretation of familiar classical melodies, while Baby and Destiny continue the film's larger-than-life narrative.

History offers a hilarious account of the band's legendary status, followed by the rebellious The Government Totally Sucks. One of the album's biggest highlights, Master Exploder, combines crushing guitar riffs with Black's extraordinary vocals. The Divide provides a brief transition before Papagenu (He's My Sassafrass) closes the first side with psychedelic acoustic textures and characteristically absurd humour.

Side B opens with Dude (I Totally Miss You), a surprisingly heartfelt rock ballad that highlights the chemistry between Black and Gass. Break In-City (Storm the Gate!) and Car Chase City return to high-energy hard rock, driving the soundtrack towards its spectacular conclusion.

The centrepiece is Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown), an epic musical confrontation featuring Dave Grohl as the Devil. Combining dramatic vocals, blistering guitar work and theatrical heavy metal arrangements, it remains one of Tenacious D's most celebrated recordings. POD follows with another powerful rock performance before The Metal closes the album with an unforgettable tribute to heavy metal's enduring power.

Blending hard rock, heavy metal, acoustic rock and musical comedy, The Pick of Destiny is both an affectionate celebration of classic rock and a brilliantly exaggerated parody of its biggest conventions. Its combination of memorable songs, impressive musicianship and outrageous humour makes it essential listening for Tenacious D fans.
