The Teskey Brothers – Half Mile Harvest (Gold Vinyl LP)

Half Mile Harvest is the acclaimed debut studio album from Australian blues and soul band The Teskey Brothers, originally released in 2017. Recorded in the band's home studio in Warrandyte, Victoria, the album introduced their remarkable ability to capture the warmth, emotion and timeless character of classic soul, rhythm and blues. With Josh Teskey's powerful, gravelly vocals, Sam Teskey's expressive guitar playing and a rhythm section steeped in vintage grooves, Half Mile Harvest established the band as one of Australia's most distinctive musical acts.

Opening track Crying Shame immediately showcases the band's soulful sound, combining heartfelt vocals, blues-inspired guitar and a rich, organic arrangement. Say You'll Do follows with a beautifully restrained performance that highlights the group's natural musical chemistry, while Pain and Misery delivers one of the album's defining moments. With its deeply expressive vocals, atmospheric instrumentation and memorable melody, the song became an early favourite among Teskey Brothers fans.

Shiny Moon brings a gentler, reflective quality to the record, allowing Josh Teskey's distinctive voice to take centre stage. Reason Why closes the first side with another captivating blend of blues guitar, soulful melodies and vintage-inspired production.

Side B opens with I Get Up, a spirited recording driven by an infectious rhythm and uplifting energy. Louisa combines a relaxed groove with expressive guitar work, while Til' the Sky Turns Black develops into a beautifully atmospheric performance. Hard Feeling returns to the band's blues roots before the extended closing track Honeymoon brings the album to an immersive conclusion, allowing the musicians room to explore their influences through a richly arranged performance.

Influenced by artists including Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye and J.J. Cale, The Teskey Brothers developed a sound that draws from the golden era of soul without simply recreating it. Their music blends classic American rhythm and blues with elements of British blues-rock, psychedelia and distinctly Australian songwriting.

One of the album's defining characteristics is its recording process. Half Mile Harvest was self-produced and recorded live to analogue tape at the band's Warrandyte studio, then mixed using an analogue console. This approach preserved the natural character of the performances, from the subtle interaction between instruments to the raw emotion of Josh Teskey's vocals. The result is a warm, intimate recording that feels remarkably immediate and authentic.

Following the success of Half Mile Harvest, The Teskey Brothers went on to achieve international recognition with albums including Run Home Slow and The Winding Way. Their debut remains an essential introduction to the band's distinctive blend of soul, blues and roots rock.
