Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – Greatest Hits (180g Vinyl 2LP)

Greatest Hits celebrates the enduring songs of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, featuring American Girl, Refugee, Free Fallin', Learning to Fly and Mary Jane's Last Dance. Originally released in 1993, this collection captures the band's blend of heartland rock, jangling guitars and unforgettable melodies.

Formed in Gainesville, Florida, in 1976, the Heartbreakers built a distinctive sound around Petty's expressive voice and direct songwriting, Mike Campbell's guitar work and Benmont Tench's keyboards. Their music blends rock and country.

Early favourites American Girl and Breakdown introduce the band's sharp hooks and restless energy. Listen to Her Heart and I Need to Know lead into the defiant Refugee, while Don't Do Me Like That, Even the Losers and The Waiting show their gift for classic rock radio anthems.

Later highlights include the psychedelic textures of Don't Come Around Here No More and three favourites from Petty's solo album Full Moon Fever: I Won't Back Down, Runnin' Down a Dream and Free Fallin'. Learning to Fly and Into the Great Wide Open add reflective storytelling, before Mary Jane's Last Dance and the cover of Something in the Air close the set.

This 2016 Geffen / UMe reissue presents the 18-track US compilation on two 180g black vinyl LPs in a gatefold sleeve. Mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, it celebrates Petty's catalogue.
