Tool - Opiate (Vinyl EP)

Opiate is the debut EP from Tool, originally released in 1992. Raw, aggressive and confrontational, the record captures the band at the beginning of their career, already establishing the heavy riffs, complex rhythms and uncompromising approach that would develop across albums including Undertow, Ænima and Lateralus.

The EP features early Tool favourites Sweat, Hush, Part Of Me and the title track Opiate. Also included are live recordings of Cold And Ugly and Jerk-Off, capturing the intensity of the band's early performances.

Produced by Tool, Sylvia Massy and Steve Hansgen, Opiate introduced the combination of alternative metal, progressive experimentation and provocative songwriting that would become central to Tool's identity. More direct and stripped back than their later releases, it remains an essential document of the band's formative sound.

This black vinyl edition also retains one of the release's most unusual features: the hidden track The Gaping Lotus Experience is cut into a parallel groove on Side B, creating an alternate path through the record depending on where the stylus lands.
