Toto – Toto IV (Vinyl LP)

Toto IV is the landmark fourth studio album from American rock band Toto, originally released in April 1982 through Columbia Records. Featuring the timeless hits Africa, Rosanna and I Won't Hold You Back, the album combines sophisticated pop rock, smooth melodies, jazz-influenced arrangements and exceptional musicianship. It remains one of the defining recordings of the early 1980s.

Formed in Los Angeles, Toto brought together some of the most accomplished session musicians in the music industry. Featuring David Paich, Steve Lukather, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Porcaro, David Hungate and Bobby Kimball, the band developed a distinctive sound built around intricate arrangements, powerful vocals and polished production.

Produced by Toto, the album was recorded primarily at Sunset Sound and Record One in Los Angeles. Its combination of rock, pop, funk and jazz reflects the band's remarkable musical versatility and attention to detail.

Opening track Rosanna immediately establishes the album's sophisticated sound with Jeff Porcaro's legendary half-time shuffle drum groove, rich keyboard arrangements and soaring vocals. The song became one of Toto's biggest hits and earned the band a Grammy Award for Record of the Year.

Make Believe follows with an infectious rhythm and uplifting chorus, while I Won't Hold You Back showcases Steve Lukather's expressive lead vocals and guitar work. Its sweeping orchestral arrangement makes it one of the band's most memorable ballads. Good for You and It's a Feeling complete the first side with melodic pop rock and atmospheric keyboards.

Side B opens with the energetic Afraid of Love, followed by the guitar-driven Lovers in the Night. We Made It combines tight rhythms with memorable harmonies, while Waiting for Your Love introduces a smooth, funk-influenced groove.

The album concludes with Africa, Toto's signature song and one of the most recognisable recordings of the 1980s. Featuring David Paich's distinctive keyboards, layered percussion and an unforgettable chorus, the track reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and remains a worldwide favourite.

Toto IV achieved enormous commercial and critical success, winning six Grammy Awards in 1983, including Album of the Year. Its combination of outstanding songwriting, technical precision and accessible melodies established Toto among the era's most successful rock bands.
