Elmore James was an American blues guitarist, singer and songwriter whose electrifying slide guitar helped shape the sound of modern blues and blues rock. Born in Mississippi in 1918, he transformed Delta blues traditions into a louder, amplified style during the 1950s and early 1960s. Known as the King of the Slide Guitar, James paired his instantly recognisable guitar attack with an intense vocal delivery, influencing generations of blues and rock guitarists who followed.
At Heathen Records, we stock a growing selection of Elmore James vinyl records in Australia, including classic recordings and collections spanning his influential career. Elmore James recorded primarily in the singles era, leaving behind classics including Dust My Broom, The Sky Is Crying, Shake Your Moneymaker, It Hurts Me Too, Standing at the Crossroads and Rollin' and Tumblin'. His recordings bridge Mississippi Delta blues and amplified Chicago blues, while his signature slide-guitar sound became a major influence on the blues-rock musicians of the 1960s and beyond.
Essential Elmore James Albums on Vinyl
Blues After Hours (1960) – The only Elmore James LP released during his lifetime, this collection brought together recordings originally issued as singles on the Flair label. Featuring Dust My Blues, Standing at the Crossroads, Blues Before Sunrise and Sunnyland, it is an essential introduction to his fiery slide guitar and early electric blues sound.
The Sky Is Crying (1965) – Released after James' death, this collection includes some of his most enduring recordings, including the title track alongside Dust My Broom, Rollin' and Tumblin', One Way Out and Standing at the Crossroads. It captures the powerful combination of slide guitar and impassioned vocals that defined his music.
The Best of Elmore James (1965) – An early posthumous collection bringing together recordings including Dust My Blues, The Sky Is Crying, Shake Your Moneymaker and Stranger Blues. For vinyl listeners, compilations such as this are particularly important because much of James' original catalogue first appeared as individual singles rather than conventional studio albums.
