Deep Above the Noise is the 2016 solo album from acclaimed Australian hip-hop producer, drummer and multi-instrumentalist Plutonic Lab. Also known as Leigh Ryan, Plutonic Lab has played an important role in Australian underground hip-hop through his solo recordings, production work and collaborations with artists including Muph, Dialectrix and Hilltop Hoods. Released through Wax Museum Records, the album brings together his love of soulful samples, intricate percussion, atmospheric electronic production and classic boom-bap rhythms.

The album opens with Out of the Night, introducing its distinctive combination of warm textures and carefully arranged beats. Pushin continues the instrumental journey with rhythmic grooves and detailed production, while Sliced Bread, featuring Canadian hip-hop collective Notes to Self BBRC, brings sharp lyricism into the mix. Flex the Complex explores a more experimental instrumental sound before Signals, featuring MoMO, combines expressive vocals with atmospheric electronic arrangements.

One of the album's standout collaborations is The Crib, featuring Detroit rapper Guilty Simpson, whose commanding delivery complements Plutonic Lab's hard-hitting production. Sirens and Cold Light showcase his ability to build immersive instrumental compositions, balancing hypnotic rhythms with layered melodic details. Do More, featuring American singer and producer Miles Bonny, introduces a soulful vocal performance that adds warmth and depth to the record.

Elsewhere, Boom delivers an energetic burst of beat-driven hip-hop, while Stray Cat explores a more laid-back instrumental atmosphere. Closing track Path to Satori, featuring Japanese rapper Coma-Chi, brings the album to a memorable conclusion, combining international hip-hop influences with Plutonic Lab's distinctive production style.

Throughout Deep Above the Noise, Plutonic Lab demonstrates the musical versatility that has made him a respected figure in Australian hip-hop. Drawing on his background as a drummer, producer and recording engineer, he creates arrangements that balance organic musicianship with electronic experimentation. The result moves naturally between instrumental hip-hop, jazz-influenced grooves, soul and contemporary beat music.

This double vinyl LP edition presents Deep Above the Noise in a format well suited to its rich, rhythm-focused production. Featuring collaborations with Guilty Simpson, Miles Bonny, Notes to Self BBRC, MoMO and Coma-Chi, the album is an excellent addition for collectors of Australian underground hip-hop and instrumental beat music.
